ThomasNet.com Interviews Roving Blue CEO Yana DeMyer

ThomasNet.com is the leading product sourcing and supplier discovery platform for procurement professionals, engineers, plant & facility management personnel. They recently interviewed Roving Blue’s CEO, Marianna “Yana” DeMyer about her journey into manufacturing portable ozone-based water purification devices.

1)  What is the mission of Roving Blue?

Our mission is to establish and grow our position as a leading supplier of advanced ozone-based water purification components and systems.

2)  What exactly is the technology that you are using in your mobile purification units?

Our mobile water purification units use 3 technologies; the first two are well understood and accepted: ultra-filtration and carbon filtration, its our 3rd technology which gets all the attention.

It is our ozone generator.  Its different because of the way we make our ozone.  We make it out of the water, not the air. This eliminates a lot of equipment, (such as air pumps), and that means in applications where size and weight are considerations, our technology becomes the clear winner.

3)  Clearly, Roving Blue is bringing disruptive technology to water purification.  Why don’t more of the right people know who you are yet?

Companies don’t get much smaller than we are right now. We don’t have a big ad budget, and rely heavily on social media to get the word out. Up until now that is. It’s not by mistake that we picked Thomasnet.com as a key partner to move forward, to “get the word out”. I personally have used Thomasnet.com for years, sourcing products and components that I need. I just knew that once the engineers and other sourcing folks could find us globally, it would be a great factor in our success.

4)  What else do you want the world to know about Roving Blue?

What I want people to know about Roving Blue is not as important as what I want people to know about ozone. Ozone has a perception problem. Most people understand it as a kind of pollution, or that there is a hole in it high up in the atmosphere, but it is so much more than that.

Ozone is a form of oxygen, “O3” instead of “O2”, and is a completely natural gas. You know that clean fresh smell after a rainstorm? That is the smell of ozone gas, which is produced with lightning.

Ozone is amazing stuff!  When it is dissolved in water, it is far more powerful than chlorine at killing things.  Yet when its job is done, it reverts back to oxygen, usually within minutes.  So there are no chemical byproducts or residues. This makes ozone hands down the cleanest and GREENEST sanitation agent available today.

Ozone is also misunderstood by a lot of technical people in this world, because the only way they have ever seen ozone being produced has been by using air and sparks (just like lightning) and they are all sizable contraptions. We can make our generators so small that you can put it in your pocket, as we did with our “O-Pen” pocket water purifier.

Other than that, I want the world know that we are not so much here to sell our products, as we are willing to partner with anyone who has to fight water quality issues across the board. Whatever industry you are in: food & beverage, paper, dairy, agriculture, aquaculture, the list goes on and on.  Everyone who deals with water has to fight water quality issues, we want to be your portable solutions provider!

Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN – 22 January, 2016:

Roving Blue, Inc., one of only two companies recognized out of a 34 state area, was honored by The Defense Alliance with its annual “Architect of Defense” award.

The Defense Alliance is an organization whose mission is to network and expand the defense industry job and technology base of the Upper Midwest, and promote the region’s innovative contributions to the nation’s defense.

According to Executive Director, Chip Laingen, The Company was chosen because it “Demonstrated superior tenacity in listening to and responding to military customer design inputs to improve its products, and innovative commercialization efforts.”

The honored guest and presenter of the evening was Major General Neal Loidolt, U.S. Army, Commanding General of the fabled 34th Infantry Division (the “Red Bulls”), who spoke about the U.S. Military’s role in global security, and the National Guard’s role in that ongoing mission.

More than 75 people from defense-oriented organizations attended the event which was hosted by HGA, one of the nation’s leading architectural and engineering firms.

The Defense Alliance is a regional catalyst for technology-based economic development.  It recently passed the $150 million mark in contract gains for companies assisted since 2011, when the SBA recognized and funded it as an Advanced Defense Technologies Cluster (ADT).  Learn more at the Alliance’s websites (www.defensealliance.com / www.powerfordefense.com).

Participation in the Defense Alliance is sought among groups and individuals with an interest in seeing the region’s defense contributions grow, including large and small firms, academic and R&D institutions, our elected officials, and professional military and trade organizations.  Its founder is Paul Wagner, Chairman & CEO of Minnesota Wire. manufactures a highly ruggedized, portable water filtration device for military expeditionary use, and for the commercial outdoor, and disaster preparedness and response markets.

The evening was sponsored in part by:  Polaris Defense, which has a rapidly growing defense portfolio; and Veteran Beer Company, a craft brewer that only hires Veterans and provides a substantial portion of its profits to Veteran causes.

The other awardee is Navitas Systems is an innovative battery solutions provider for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and Energy (DoE), and commercial users.  Their novel 6T lithium battery will be used in a variety of ground combat vehicles (including the new Humvee replacement called JLTV– recently awarded to Oshkosh Truck).

No, we aren’t in the middle of a zombie apocalypse… (although our bet is that our water purification units could survive one!)

Our CEO (Yana DeMyer), our CFO (Jim Gilmet) and our esteemed military liason (Tucker Campion) are at SOCOM in Largo, FL this week. SOCOM is the Unified Combatant Command charged with overseeing the various Special Operations Component Commands of the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps of the United States Armed Forces.

According to SOCOM, these events that provide an opportunity for technology developers to interact with operational personnel to determine how their technology development efforts and ideas may support or enhance Special Operations Forces.

We are proud to have been selected to participate!
